Wayne highly recommends that a radon meter be installed with every radon mitigation system

Over a year ago, a radon system was installed in a Miami/Dade single family home. A radon meter was provided. Radon level was reduced to around 2.0 picoCuries per liter and did not rise for a year. However, a month ago, the owner was alarmed when the meter sounded the alarm and indicated a radon level of around 38 picoCuries per liter. A second meter was placed which confirmed the accuracy of the first instrument’s measurement. The cause of the sudden and massive increase in radon has not yet been identified, but an investigation is under way. It is suspected that Karst Topography and sea level rise and water table fluctuations may be the cause.

SmartVentilation has been called to radon issue homes with homemade filters that had not been serviced every 60-90 days as required. Homemade filters are very rarely serviced as written service instructions are not often given and stickers are placed out-of-sight and are sketchy. It is not uncommon to be called to a home being sold with a radon system that is not working because of an unserviced, homemade filter. Many have not worked for 12-15 years because the filters have been stopped up within weeks after the installation was completed years before.
