Radon Mitigation in South Florida's Hot, Humid Climate

3 Key Facts: What you need to know

ENERGY EFFICIENT, AIRTIGHT CONSTRUCTION CREATES AIR QUALITY PROBLEMS LIKE RADON

TO CONSERVE ENERGY: the Florida Energy Code has required that homes be built of airtight construction. RESULT? Contaminants like Radon, Formaldehyde,, Acrolein and Carbon Dioxide are trapped and easily build up to unhealthy/dangerous levels.

IN MOST STATES, SCIENTISTS HAVE PERSUADED THE LEGISLATURES TO AMEND BUILDING CODES TO REQUIRE MECHANICAL VENTILATION FRESH AIR SYSTEMS.

RECENT DEVELOPMENT (July 2017). The Florida Building Code was amended to require that fresh air be added to every new home unless a mandatory blower door test revealed that the home was “not airtight” and leaked sufficient fresh air. RESULT? Indoor air quality often improved from the mandatory addition of fresh air in homes permitted and built after July 1, 2017.

PROBLEM: HOMES BUILT AIRTIGHT, EVEN WITH MECHANICAL VENTILATION SYSTEMS INSTALLED, CAN HAVE NEW AIR QUALITY PROBLEMS LIKE MOISTURE AND MOLD

In South Florida, where does radon come from?

  • On all floors? Out of building materials, usually concrete
  • On Ground Floors? Out of the soil and building materials
